Quarterly Services Survey

U.S. Information sector revenue for the fourth quarter of 2013, adjusted for seasonal variation but not for price changes, was $326.0 billion, an increase of 1.9 percent (+/- 0.6) from the third quarter of 2013.4th Qtr 2013: +1.9 % change3rd Qtr 2013 (r): +1.7 % change

New Residential Construction

Building permits in August 2013 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 918,000, down 3.8 percent from the revised July rate and up 11.0 percent from August 2012. Housing starts in August 2013 were at a SAAR of 891,000, up 0.9 percent from the revised July estimate and up 19.0 percent from August 2012.

Dr. Sue Helper Named U.S. Commerce Department Chief Economist

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced that Dr. Susan Helper will serve as the department’s new Chief Economist, a post within Commerce’s Economics and Statistics Administration. For the past year, Dr. Helper served as Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers.

Let Freedom Ring

On Friday, June 28th, I was given the honor of speaking to about 500 people from 80 countries who took the oath to become U.S. citizens at a ceremony in Sterling, Virginia. The happiness, joy, pride, and gratitude in the room brought tears to my eyes, especially after imagining the collective hardships endured, the journeys taken, and the fears overcome by our new citizens.
